Your journey in detail
Your journey with ChingiTours begins when you leave the airport at Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport on “Day Zero”, i.e. one day before the start of the actual tour: our Mauritanian partner will be waiting for you at the exit and will take you to your comfortable hotel, where you will spend the night before the start of your group tour.
Our journey begins on day 1 in Nouakchott - the young capital that has more to offer than you might expect. If you are observant, you will discover real highlights here and definitely Mauritania in a nutshell: for example, the lively fishing port Port de Pêche in the Sebkha district or the famous camel market in the east of the city, in Toujounine. Its loud, bustling activity is said to be unparalleled in the whole of West Africa - and is an experience for all the senses. It is also worth taking a closer cultural look: The imposing Saudi Mosque, the green city garden and a relaxed traditional evening tea on the beach (very strong, very sweet, frothy crown, delicious!) are also on the agenda.
On the second day, we head out of the city to the most beautiful dunes in Mauritania! We leave Nouakchott in the morning and follow the well-maintained N1 national road towards Adrar. On the way, we take a break in Akjoujt - the small capital of the Inchiri region, known as a real gold digger's paradise. Here we fortify ourselves with a delicious lunch. After another hour's drive, we reach Azoueiga - a picturesque desert village, popular on Instagram and our destination for the night. We set up camp here and enjoy our first night of camping under the Sahara starry sky - an unforgettable moment that makes the magic of the desert tangible.
A real highlight awaits us on the third day: the green oasis of Terjit. We enjoy a relaxed lunch here under shady date palms - and those who wish can take a refreshing dip in the natural spring pool. The perfect break to leave the drive through the desert behind for a moment. We then continue to Atar, the lively capital of the Adrar region. Traditional life and modern everyday life come together here - there is plenty for you to discover at the market. And before we head even deeper into the desert, it's best to stock up on everything here: Water, gasoline, cash - better safe than sorry. Our journey then takes us to the somewhat quieter oasis of Mhaireth, idyllically situated between dunes and rocks. Depending on the season, it even boasts a small lake. However, there is not much time left - because the next destination is already waiting: the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ouadane, where we end the day in a selected and cozy auberge.
Ouadane is the first historical ksar on our trip - and a real gem. Picturesquely built on a hillside, the town impresses with a sprawling, partly dilapidated old town where you can actually get lost. On a guided tour on day 4, we learn all about the town's eventful history - and about the legendary 40 wise men, after whom the main street is still named today. Another highlight awaits just 25 kilometers away: the mysterious Guilb er Richat, also known as the Eye of the Sahara. This huge rock formation is so large that it can even be seen from space. Our 4x4 detour there offers the perfect opportunity for spectacular aerial shots - for drone enthusiasts! Afterwards, it would be possible to head straight to Chinguetti - but why hurry? Because Tanouchert, the quiet oasis between Ouadane and Chinguetti directly in Erg Ouarane, invites you to have a late lunch in secluded tranquillity. Two hours later, we finally reach the cultural heart of Mauritania: Chinguetti.
In Chinguetti, the symbol of Mauritania, we encounter a city full of history - and full of transience. The mosque, old town and libraries are gradually threatening to sink into the desert sand. This makes the visit on day 5 all the more moving: the inhabitants share their knowledge of ancient scrolls and provide personal insights. And yes - the ChingiTours landmark is here! But we move on to the year 1984 - more precisely to Fort Saganne, which was built for the film of the same name and offers a magnificent view. After a short stop at the rock carvings of Agrour, we reach the mighty monoliths of Ben Amera and Ben Aïcha. We set up camp within earshot of the iron ore train - for many the most unforgettable evening of the trip.
The most adventurous part of the trip awaits us on day 6 in Choum, where we board the “longest horse in the Sahara” - the iron ore train, which is several kilometers long. On the open wagon, the motto is: Use the equipment we provide: roll out your mattress, put on your goggles and off you go - twelve hours of dusty, unforgettable train ride through the desert! If you prefer something a little more comfortable, you can alternatively choose the passenger coach in Zouérat - but only on site and without advance reservation. This option is also popular with our guests and offers a more comfortable, albeit somewhat longer journey through the Mauritanian expanse.
After this long night with a view of the stars in the Sahara sky, you discover a completely different facet of Mauritania on the seventh day: the port city of Nouadhibou. Here you freshen up after the dusty journey and take a shower. After a city tour and a visit to the fishing port, you will have an impression of this city on the Atlantic and continue your journey towards Nouakchott, where you will have a last cup of tea with us before we take you to the airport. Depending on your flight time, we will be happy to reserve another night in a hotel for you.
