Further information

The levadas in Madeira are man-made irrigation canals that transport the water from the north to the sunny south, thus making the economic boom possible. Some of them are over 100 years old and run artistically and spectacularly through gorges, along steep rock faces and through gloomy tunnels. The maintenance routes are now used for tourism, the levadas are still in operation and are regularly maintained.
